Yao was born in Tongxiang, Jiaxing, Zhejiang on March 17, 1982. She graduated from Beijing Film Academy and Hangzhou Arts School.
Yao began her career by appearing in small roles in many television series and films, such as June Sunlight, Music Up, Master Lu Ban, The Last Concubine, Golden Earring, Kaichuang Shengshi. Yao's first film role was a worker uncredited appearance in the film A Zhen and Her Hostess (2004).
Chinese actress Yao Di is featured in a series of photos. She shot to fame after she was chosen to play a leading role in the remake of the TV drama "The Dream of the Red Chamber" which is set to hit small screen in China by end of 2010.
